This note started as a mini video, so if you'd like to also watch/listen to this message it's here, and then continue reading…
What if I could give you several ideas for what to record in a repeatable way so that you don’t get stuck wondering, “what could I record of my artwork this week?” Well, I wanna give you exactly that packaged up in a quick but dense tip (read: several related tips) for your art video workflow that you can immediately play with the next time you choose to record some of your studio time. I talk a lot about documenting your art journey and using video as a tool to document. Here are four super practical tips pulled directly from my workshop slides last month: #1 — Check in with yourself before recording anything. Before you start your studio time, ask yourself if if sounds like fun to record some of it today. If it’s a “yes”…then continue with your recording workflow. (BTW we intentionally have monthly member success calls dedicated to this inside Ready to Record to help members align their art videos with their artwork every month.) #2 — Record yourself making art.As you’re actively in progress on a piece, record yourself working on it. This is a classic. #3 — Record your finishing touches on a piece + the finished work too. When you're wrapping up finishing a piece, record the finishing touches (however that looks like for you) *and* also record some footage of the finished work itself once it's done and ready for a collector to buy it. #4 — Record weekly studio diaries. This is about keeping a studio video diary for yourself…and it’s also my new favorite! Once a week to kickstart this: Record to document what you're thinking about and the decisions that you're making in your work that week. This is a talking to camera kind of thing, but think of it as you're talking to your future self. You're reminding your future self what you were working on that week, what you were in the middle of, or how you were thinking about it and the decisions that you were making. ... Which of these ideas for what to record will you act on this month? Choose one and reply to let me know! I’d love to hear. Keep creating, -Zach |
